BOAT TOUR IN THE CANO NEGRO WILDLIFE RESERVE

TRAVEL NORTH TO ONE OF COSTA RICA'S MORE BIOLOGICALLY DIVERSE REGIONS

Located near the border of Nicaragua, The Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge and Rio Frio (Frio River) are biological humid areas considered to be one of the richest in biological diversity in Costa Rica where a great variety of flora and fauna can be observed.  The northern wetlands are considered among Costa Rica's most eco diverse areas.

To get to the Cano Negro Reserve, you will drive north through the San Carlos plains enjoying the beautiful scenery of the side of the road, which features a great variety of agricultural fields with different products, such as: sugar cane, cassava (yucca), pineapples, bananas, papayas, orange trees, legumes, and other fruits and vegetables.  The drive from the Arenal Volcano / La Fortuna de San Carlos Region to the pier takes about 90 minutes.

Upon arrival at the pier you will board a motorized boat that will take you through the Canals of the River "Rio Frio" and its breathtaking surroundings. Thousands of animals inhabit the banks of the river and with some luck you will have to opportunity to see monkeys, sloth, caimans, turtles, bats and a great variety of birds living in their natural habitat.

During the green season, mountain water is plentiful and the banks of Río Frio overflow in Caño Negro. The entire reserve becomes a shallow lake, a wintering site for migrant American birds. Then during the dry season - November through April - the water levels fall. By the beginning of summer, all that remains is Río Frío's main channel.
